In order to show off their latest investment, Astro Soccer 4 U, based at the Whyteleafe Community Sports Centre in Surrey recently commissioned Horizon Imaging to take some plan-view aerial photographs of their new all-weather “3G” football pitch. 3G or Third Generation pitches use green plastic fibres and a granular rubber infill designed to mimic the feel and responsiveness of a grass pitch whilst allowing games to be played in all weathers without wearing out.
After permission to operate had been granted by the nearby Surrey Hills Gliding club (based at Kenley Aerodrome which is less than a mile from the football pitches) the flights commenced. As well as photographing their new pitch from above, the client also asked to have a similar plan-view photograph taken of their smaller 3G pitch which had been installed a few years previously.

Everything went very smoothly, with the drone climbing to approximately 100ft to capture the smaller pitch, and 200ft to capture the larger pitch. Whilst on site I also offered to take some more generic oblique views of the football grounds to help give the club’s customers a better idea of the size and location of the facilities. The drone was already airborne after all and it took just seconds to reposition the drone and capture a couple of different shots.
